Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D for the 3DS is not your ordinary Resident Evil. This game has a lot less focus on storyline and more on fast paced zombie killing action. It follows the formula of “The Mercenaries” mode from the past Resident Evil titles. They were previously bonus modes that you can only play once you finish the previous games. Now, game developer Capcom wants to bring it to the Nintendo 3DS as a full-fledged standalone game and we’re not complaining!

The visuals look really good and impressive. Chris Redfield looks a lot like the ones in Resident Evil 4 and with the exception of being in lower resolution; the graphics are way better than most handhelds and even better than the PS2. This game really takes advantage of the 3D effects where you’ll see yourself dodging fiery explosions in real life.

The game lets you play a specific character: Chris Redfield, Claire Redfield, Hunk and Jack Krauser. Depending on which characters you choose, they will have specific weapons to start out with and you’re job is to kill as much zombies going against the clock. Killing a number of zombies in a row adds to your overall time and also collecting red bonus crystals which can be found lying around the map. Other Resident Evil trademark items such as grenades, ammos, herbs are available for pickup as well.

The game is exceptional and is a technical accomplishment as it’s one of the most visually striking games available for the Nintendo 3DS. Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D plays a lot like those from the next-gen home console games which says a lot for the power of the Nintendo 3DS. If you’re a Resident Evil fan and can’t wait for Resident Evil: Revelations, then The Mercenaries 3D can certainly keep you busy!
